Flying Ants vs. Termites: How To Tell The Difference (Before It's Too Late)

Flying ants are a nuisance. Termite swarmers can mean thousands in damage. Here's exactly how to tell them apart in under 60 seconds.

See a swarm of winged insects inside your home? Don't panic โ€” but don't ignore it either. Flying ants and termite swarmers look almost identical at a glance, but one is a minor annoyance and the other is a warning sign of active structural damage.

Here's how to tell them apart in three quick checks, plus what to do next.

The 3 physical differences that matter

Get close (or take a phone photo and zoom in) and look for these three things:

### 1. The waist - **Termites**: straight, uniform body with no pinched waist. They look like a single fat grain of rice with wings. - **Flying ants**: obvious pinched, narrow waist between the thorax and abdomen โ€” the classic "ant" silhouette.

### 2. The antennae - **Termites**: straight, bead-like antennae. - **Flying ants**: bent or "elbowed" antennae with a distinct 90ยฐ angle.

### 3. The wings - **Termites**: four wings, all the same size and shape, roughly twice as long as the body. Wings fall off easily โ€” piles of translucent wings on a windowsill are a classic termite sign. - **Flying ants**: four wings, but the front pair is noticeably larger than the back pair. Wings stay attached.

Signs of damage (only termites cause these)

Even if you can't catch a swarmer to inspect, the damage patterns are different:

  • **Mud tubes** on foundation walls or crawlspace piers โ†’ termites (subterranean)
  • **Small piles of pellet-shaped droppings** that look like coffee grounds โ†’ termites (drywood)
  • **Hollow-sounding wood** when tapped with a screwdriver โ†’ termites
  • **Bubbling or blistering paint** on trim or drywall โ†’ termites
  • **Small mounds of fine sawdust** near wood โ†’ carpenter ants (still serious, but different treatment)
  • **Just the winged insects, no other damage** โ†’ most likely flying ants

When to call an exterminator

Call today if you see: - A swarm of winged insects inside your home in spring or early summer - Discarded wings on windowsills, spider webs, or floors - Mud tubes on any concrete or masonry surface - Any of the damage signs above

A licensed exterminator can identify the species for free during an inspection and confirm whether it's a nuisance swarm or an active colony eating your framing. Termite damage is rarely covered by homeowners insurance โ€” early detection is the only cheap fix.
